Featured Artist: Der Produzent RAMSES B June 2015

video

You often ask your fan opinions on your music. To what extent do your fans impact your future ideas and projects?

There is a definite relationship that's built up between me and my listeners. When I first started putting my music out there it was all about diversity and releasing as much as I could to get the practice and experience of music production. There gets to a point where you need more feedback because although people may initially listen because they like your music, they will stay because you can keep raising the bar. By asking opinions of others it gives an insight to how they perceive the music, how to improve it and fine tune certain aspects for future projects. It is almost as if we feed off each other’s inspiration to continually move forward in music creation.

How do you choose people that are featured on your tracks? How do these collaborations come about?

These situations can vary, sometimes vocalists might be people I already know (having gone to a music college and university it was easy to make those sort of contacts.) Other times they're independent vocalists who contact me or I would contact them depending on the track I'm working on. There is community of vocalists who work with electronic producers, word gets around about these singers especially if they have some great top-lines. Just to name a few, Veela, Danyka Nadeau, Charlotte Haining, Holly Drummond, Zoë Philips, I have worked with them and each have their own distinct sound that would suit different styles of music. When it comes to collaborating, I usually send over the track and they send me some ideas before recording it properly in the studio which they will send back to me to work on. Once finished I always send it back to them to make sure they are happy with it, I think it's important they get a say in the creative process as well.

What does it take for you to say ‘This track is complete!’? When do you know it’s ready for sharing with your audience?

It's hard to say when a track is complete because there is always something you can do with it. Knowing when to stop is a skill in itself. It's less about what you hear and more about what you feel. I've had times where I kept adding layers of sound because something didn't sound right, but this can sometimes make more of a mess since the combination of certain sounds is more important than how many layers you have. In the end it comes down to what you envision for a song and what your tools can do to get you there (combined with your creativity and problem solving skills). Of course I always try to make sure a song ticks all the boxes (production, composition, melodies, etc.) and I always have ideas for songs but I never truly know how it will turn out as a finished product, which I think is what makes production more exciting.

Are you involved in songwriting as well, or do you focus solely on music production?

I like to indulge in some songwriting from time to time; it adds a bit more variety into my work. I've written lyrics for vocalists to sing, most notably my track 'I Need You' with Charlotte Haining who I've worked with on other tracks as well, working closely with lyric and melody writing. One of my tracks 'Moving On' actually has me singing on it dare I say, albeit slightly auto-tuned as I'm not a very good singer! It was mostly for the tone and feel of the track anyway as any vocals can add another dimension. If it sounds like it needs something it's probably some vocals, even if it's just some spoken word or speech samples.

With a back a catalogue of over 100 songs, how do you pick which songs to play when you do a live set?

Having this many actually makes it easier for me to choose. Each track is like a page out of a diary, a snapshot of how I was feeling at the time. More importantly I like diversity within my music so depending on the venue, crowd and event I can pick and choose what style and feel I want to go for in a set. Usually I like to go from mellow to more energetic during a set, it gives a feeling a progression and energy that crescendos, it's quite euphoric.

How would you describe the difference in creative process between remixing a song and creating an original track, and what drives you to do both?

I would say remixing is easier and probably more fun too. If you're just starting out, it's great practice to remix because there are music elements already there to play around with and work the music around. It's also good for an inspiration boost, sometimes working on original material for too long can leave you with producer's block but working on a remix can spark new ideas and change your perspective on how things should sound. Especially when the main hook is already there, it's nice to take these parts and manipulate them into your version of their song while taking in new ideas that they have come up with. This very much influences original material too so it's important to manage when to remix so you can keep that flow going.

What have you planned for the rest of 2015?

Plenty of new music, a few new EPs, maybe an album too? I average around 25 songs a year depending on what music is being made, hopefully I can match that again. I will also be playing at Liquicity's first summer festival in Amsterdam this July, where a huge community of liquid drum & bass lovers will congregate to have a good time! I will also use this time to sort out some merchandise and an official website, finally.

How do the publishing royalties that you generate help you with your music production?

It's great to know that if you release a track for free you can still get publishing royalties to help fund the music.

I'm lucky to get myself into virtuous cycle of making music that generate royalties to further upgrade my studio so I can better my music. Such things recently include a subwoofer to properly monitor bass frequencies, a MacBook pro so I can finally take my music out the studio and produce on the move, even small things like cables can add up but are all essential in the pursuit of music production. Of course you may not need all this starting out and I thought it a dream to have all that, but over time it's a natural feeling to want to better yourself, to improve on your skills and knowledge, getting new tools to experiment with and progressing with your sound. If you have that drive it's always possible. I am now living what I described many years ago, my dream job.
